The winner of this contest was the Finnish poet Urho Karhumäki. His work, Avoveteen (In open water), tells of athlete Yrjö Niemelä. In 1939, the work was made into a movie by Orvo Saarikivi, depicting the main character participating in the 1940 Helsinki Olympics (which were never held due to World War II).
The silver medal work, by Wilhelm Ehmer, writes about the failed ascent of the Mount Everest by George Mallory and Andrew Irvine. Mallory, in 1924, had won an Olympic gold medal for alpinism in an earlier attempt to scale the world’s highest peak. Jan Parandowski, winner of the bronze, submitted a novel set in Ancient Greece, Dysk olimpijski (Olympic Discus).
