Great Britain’s Edgar Bredin was the heavy favorite. As an amateur he had set the world record for 400 metres at a meet in London in June 1895, and that mark still stood at the time of the 1900 Olympics. Bredin won easily over France’s Legrain with his countryman Jules Bouchoux in third. Bredin also won the 100 metres and 1,500 metres in the 1900 professional events, while Bouchoux finished second to him in both of those events, and also placed third in the 2,500 metre steeplechase and the long jump.
