The Japanese form of fencing, called kendō, was one of the three traditional Japanese sports demonstrated at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics (along with kyudō and sumō). The fights were not competitive in nature and did not yield a final ranking.
The International Kendo Federation (FIK, which formerly used the acronym IKF) was established in 1970 to propagate and develop kendo, iaido, and jodo internationally. As of January 2026, 64 countries/regions are FIK affiliates.
