Skijoring, originally called skid-körning, was held as a demonstration sport at the 1928 Olympic Winter Games in St. Moritz. The organizing committee of the Denver 1976 Olympic Winter Games also proposed it as a demonstration sport, but those Games were shifted to Innsbruck, Austria.
Skijoring is a sport in which skiers are towed behind horses, although other methods of propulsion are also used (motorcycles, dogs). It was considered a military competition in Norway and Sweden, and was part of the Nordic Games in 1901, 1905, and 1909. It is today contested primarily in Switzerland and Sweden. A governing body, Skijor International, was formed in 2012.
