André Wohllebe

André Wohllebe competed for SC Berlin-Grünau. In addition to his Olympic achievements (one gold and two bronzes) he was an eight-time world champion. Wohllebe partnered Kay Bluhm at the 1988 Seoul Olympics in the K-2 500 and finished seventh representing East Germany. He also won bronze medals in the K-1 1,000 and K-4 1,000. At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, now representing re-unified Germany, he won the K-4 1,000 gold medal. Wohllebe won at the Worlds the K2-500 and K2-1,000 in 1983; the K4-500 in 1985, 1986, and 1991; the K4-500 and K4-10,000 in 1991; and the K4-1,000 and K4-10,000 in 1993. He also won four silver medals and five bronze medals at the Worlds.

In the German Democratic Republic Wohllebe was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit multiple times. After German reunification, he successfully finished an apprenticeship as a building plumber. He finished his career in 1996 and later, with Frank Fischer, brother of multiple Olympic canoe champion Birgit Fischer-Schmidt, was CEO of a canoe-specialty shop in Berlin. Wohllebe died after a short illness with pancreatic cancer.
