Frank Gartrell was only eight-years-old when he started ski jumping, soon joining the Fort William Ski Club in Ontario. In 1962 Gartrell competed at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Zakopane, Poland, placing 50th on the large hill. Two years later he was named in the Canadian Olympic team for the Innsbruck Games for the normal hill event, but ultimately did not start. Not long after he suffered a serious fall which, ended his competitive career.
Despite the setback Gartrell remained involved in the sport, sitting on the board of directors of the Big Thunder Ski Jumping Centre. In addition to coaching new talent he also did stints as a colour commentator for CBC Sports on ski jumping events. Away from sport Gartrell worked as a teacher at a local high school. In 1992 he was inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame.
