Amy Nixon began curling at the age of fourteen and originally aspired to be the skip (captain) of her own rink (team). Although she had some limited success in this pursuit at the provincial level, her greatest victories have come as the third on Shannon Kleibrink’s team, beginning with the 2004 Alberta Provincial Championship. The following year the rink entered the 2005 Olympic trials and started with a 1-3 record before capturing their next seven games and, in the process, the right to represent Canada at the 2006 Winter Olympics. At the curling tournament the foursome, which also included Glenys Bakker as second and Christine Keshen as lead, took home a bronze medal against a field of tough competitors. Her father, Daryl, was the team’s coach at the Games. Since the Olympics she has stuck with Team Kleibrink and, as of 2010, is the last remaining Olympic member of the team, aside from Kleibrink herself. Along the way she picked up another provincial championship, in 2008, and was runner-up at the 2008 Canadian National Championships and the 2009 Olympic trials. Outside of curling she is a graduate of the University of Calgary, with degrees in kinesiology, women’s studies, and law. She was admitted to the Alberta bar in November 2006.
