Biography

Drusilla van Hengel competed in the K4 flatwater event at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Van Hengel attended Dartmouth College and later earned a PhD in social ecology at UC Irvine, and then an MBA at the Bainbridge Graduate Institute. She worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the Institute of Transportation Studies.

Van Hengel worked from 1997-2011 as a transportation operations supervisor for the city of Santa Barbara, California. She then worked with Alta Planning + Design as a northwest planning manager, before becoming a principal with Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associated in Portland, Oregon. Van Hengel’s father was a partner in the New York bank, Brown Brothers Harriman. She married Joshua Patlak, who was a fitness instructor and a certified international football (soccer) referee.
