William Gates competed for the New York AC, but in 1968 was in the US Army, stationed at Fort Totten in Queens, New York. He attended school at Northeastern University. Gates was US Champion in C-1 1,000 metres and the C-2 10K in 1968. He placed second in the 1968 North American Championships in C-2 10K. Gates raced with Malcolm Hickox in C-2 at the Olympics. Gates later worked in Belgrade, Maine as a plant engineer with Philips Elmet Corporation.
