Albert E. Austin

Stockbroker Albert E. Austin competed in the golf competition at the 1904 Summer Olympics and, along with his father Albert W. and eventual gold medal-winner George Lyon, was one of only three Canadians among a field of 72 American competitors at the tournament. His score of 211 was better than his father’s 230, but still a far shot from the qualifying number of 183. Although born in Winnipeg, a city where his father had set up the country’s first commercial electric street railways system, he returned to his father’s native Toronto in 1892. He donated many of his personal pictures and documents to the City of Toronto Archives. Albert E. Austin died quite young from tuberculosis.
