Major Friedrich Gerhard was a dressage rider winning both the gold medal with the German team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and the silver medal in the individual event. In 1933, his horse Absinth arrived at the Cavalry School Hannover and received his further education by Gerhard. He was then head of the school stable as a Lieutenant Colonel. Gerhard was one of the riding teachers of the double 1936 Olympic gold medal winner Heinz Pollay.
