This was only the third time the event was held at the Olympics, after 1928 and 1932. Germany won the gold medal, which was not surprising in Berlin in a fully judged event, repeating the gold medal they had also won in 1928. At Los Angeles in 1932, France had won gold and Sweden silver, and in Berlin, they won the silver and bronze medals, respectively. After the War, France would win the gold medal again in 1948. Austria finished fourth, with a team that included 72-year-old Arthur von Pongracz, one of the oldest Olympic competitors ever. Von Pongracz had also competed at the 1924 and 1928 Olympics.
