David O’Connor was a three-time Olympic medalist in eventing, winning individual gold and team bronze in 2000, after taking a team silver in 1996. He competed in the team event in 1996-2000 alongside his wife, Karen Lende O’Connor, a five-time Olympian.
David O’Connor won two eventing medals at the World Equestrian Games, a bronze in 1998 and a silver in 2002. He also competed at the 1990 and 1994 World Equestrian Games. At the 1999 Pan American Games he won silver individually and a gold in the team event. He won the CCI4* at the 1997 Badminton Horse Trials aboard Custom Made.
O’Connor stopped riding competitively in 2004. He became a coach and administrator for eventing, working with the Canadian National Team in 2006 as international technical advisor. He was President of the US Equestrian Federation from 2004-12. He later became eventing committee chair for the FEI (Fédération Equestrian Internationale).
O’Connor was inducted into the United States Eventing Association’s Hall of Fame in 2009. He and Karen Lende O’Connor operated equestrian training facilities in The Plains, Virginia and Ocala, Florida.
