Biography

Zara Phillips competed in equestrian eventing at the 2012 London Olympics, winning a silver medal in the team event. Later Zara Tindall, following her 2011 marriage to England rugby international Mike Tindall, she won the individual eventing World Championship at Aachen in 2006, adding a silver in the team competition, for which she was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year. She had been chosen for both the 2004 and 2008 Olympics but her horses sustained injuries each time. Phillips was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2007 New Year Honours for her services to equestrianism

Phillips was born into the British Royal Family as the daughter of Anne, Princess Royal and Captain Mark Phillips. At her birth she was sixth in line of succession to the British throne. After the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Phillips-Tindall stood as 20th in line of succession to the throne of England in September 2022.

Phillips attended Beaudesert Park School in Stroud, Gloucestershire; Port Regis School in Shaftesbury, Dorset; and then Gordonstoun School in Moray, Scotland. She represented her schools in hockey, athletics, and gymnastics. Phillips later studied at the University of Exeter and qualified as a physiotherapist.

Phillips first breakthrough in eventing came in 2003 when she was runner-up at the Burghley Horse Trials in her first four-star event. Her honours include individual and team gold medals at the 2005 European Eventing Championships, and a team gold medal at the 2007 Europeans. In January 2020, Phillips became a non‑executive director of Cheltenham Racecourse.
