A track sprinter, Liv Podmore competed at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics in sprint, keirin, and team sprint. She started as a BMX racer but turned to sprinting. Her big breakthrough came at the 2015 World Junior Championships when she won silver in the team sprint and bronze in the time trial.
Podmore won the 2017 New Zealand title in the keirin. She also competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2019 World Championships but did not make the New Zealand team for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She died the day after the Tokyo 2020 Closing Ceremony, and her death was a suspected suicide, after she had posted recent troubling comments on her social media accounts about the pressures of high-level sport.
