Teddy Billington arrived in New York from England as a baby and was brought up in the hotbed of American cycling at the turn of this century – Vailsburg, New Jersey. Billington’s silver medal in the ½-mile was remarkable his bike had not yet arrived by train so he borrowed another machine and rode to a second place behind Marcus Hurley. He worked as a shoe-cutter for the Johnson and Murphy shoe company in Newark.
