Mauro De Pellegrin started racing late, at 16, in the student category with Rubertex Bagnolese, winning 10 titles beginning in 1971. In 1973 he joined Termolan and then in 1975 moved to the Giacobazzi squad, where he remained until the end of his career, wearing the Italian Championship in his specialty, the time trial.
De Pellegrin joined the national 100 km team with excellent success. In 1977 he won silver at the World Championship in San Cristobal, Venezuela, won gold at the 1979 Split Mediterranean Games, and in 1980 was fifth at the Moskva Olympics along with Gianni Giacomini, Ivano Maffei, and Alberto Minetti. He added victories on the road including two wins at Milano-Reggio Emilia, a Baracchi Trophy with teammate Stefano Boni, and two Italian individual time trial titles in 1980 and 1982. In November 1982 he ending his cycling career without turning pro.
