Biography

Alex Ekström was a successful veteran on the course round Lake Mälaren, the course of the 1912 Olympic Games although he never won the race. He finished second in 1906, 1908, and 1909, third in 1911, and ninth in 1918. In the Olympic road time trial, he took 12th place individually, which was, however, not enough to make the top four of the victorious Swedish team. Therefore, he was a non-scoring member of the team and narrowly missed the team gold medal.

Other achievements by Ekström were a victory in the first edition of Skandisloppet (Scandinavian Race) in Uppsala in 1909 and the win of the team event of the time trial of the 1913 Swedish Championships with the team of VIF Diana, Eskilstuna, which included in addition to Ekström the Olympians Arvid Pettersson and Ragnar Malm.

In 1915 Ekström married Gertrud Katarina Gauffing, with whom he had one daughter. He worked as a metalworker and later became foreman in a mechanical workshop.
