Jānis Lievens was an illegitimate son of a Baltic-German mother from the Latvian town of Cēsis. In 1912, he competed in the road time trial at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm. He abandoned the race outside Södertälje, after approximately 50 km.
In Rīgā, he worked in various industrial plants. He was involved in the Russian Revolution of 1905, producing weapons and flying the red flag at the chimney of the “Provodnik” plant. During World War I, he fled to Russia and studied engineering in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg). He worked as an engineer in the Kremlin in Moskva. He probably died around 1952 and was survived by his wife Anna.
