Fred Markus bought his first racing bicycle from Brown’s Cycles on Toronto’s famous Yonge Street in Toronto in 1951 and made his international début for Canada at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. His next stop was the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, where he was eliminated in the round one repêchage of the sprint. He also took part in the road race, but failed to finish. He then had his busiest year in 1958, taking part in both the British Empire and Commonwealth Games and the World Championships, and also racing in France and Belgium. His final competitive year was 1959, when he raced at the Pan American Games. A graduate of the Ryerson Institute of Technology (now part of Ryerson University) in chemical engineering, he moved to Australia in 1963, where he worked as an industrial engineer until his 1999 retirement.
