Petr Matoušek

During the 1970s Czechoslovak cyclist Petr Matoušek won two medals at the UCI Road World Championships and competed at two Olympic Games. Ahead of the 1970 championships Matoušek spent time in Great Britain where he rode in the Milk Races held in both England and Scotland, finishing eighth overall in the latter. The 1970 World Championships took place in August in Leicester, with the Czechoslovak team of Matoušek, Jiří Mainuš, František Řezáč, and Milan Puzrla winning silver.

In 1972 Matoušek became the national road race champion, earning himself a place on the Olympic team. At the München Games he finished 47th in the road race in a group of 40-or-so riders who were just over 2:30 behind the winning time. He also finished 13th with the Czechoslovak team in the 100 kilometres team time trial. He continued to have consistent results over the next few years, including winning a stage of the Tour of Algeria in 1973, along with finishing first overall at the 1975 Tour of Yugoslavia. He also won another medal in the team time trial at the World Championships in 1975, this time taking home bronze with Vlastimil Moravec, Vladimír Vondráček, and Petr Bucháček.

Matoušek competed at his second Olympics in 1976, finishing fifth in the 100 kilometres team time trial at the Montréal Games. For the next couple of years he continued to ride in multiple stage races in Europe, finishing on the podium on several occasions.
