Don Nelsen came from a well-known US cycling family. His father, Chester Nelsen, Jr. competed in the road race at the 1948 Olympics, while his grandfather, Chester Nelsen, Sr., competed on the road at the 1928 Olympics. The Nelsens are the only three-generation US Olympic cycling family. Don Nelsen raced out of the St. Louis Cycling Club. He broke family tradition by racing on the track in Tokyo, in the team pursuit.
