Biography

Thai cyclist Chainarong Sophonpong represented his country on both the road and track during the 1960s, winning multiple medals at international sporting events. In 1964 Sophonpong was selected to compete at the Tokyo Olympics, placing 28th with his compatriots in the team time trial. The following year he won two gold medals at the SEAP Games in Kuala Lumpur with victory in both the team road race and the team time trial. In 1966 he won his first medals at the Asian Games, taking silver in both the team road race and the 10 km race.

Sophonpong returned to the Olympics for the 1968 Games in Mexico City, competing on both the road and track. Two years later he made another appearance at the Asian Games, winning gold in the 10 km race, along with silver in both the 1,600 metres team time trial and the 4,000 metres team pursuit.
