Roger Young was a good all-around cyclist who raced on the track and road, but was best known as a track sprinter. He was US Champion in the match sprint in 1973, placed second in 1974 and 1979, and was third in 1972 and 1978. Young won a gold medal in team pursuit at the 1975 Pan American Games. On the roads, Young won the 1972 Tour of Somerville, the top one-day road race in the United States in that era. He also won the 1971 Tour of Inglemanster, a Belgium road race. Young competed through 1982.
After he stopped racing, Young became a top cycling coach. One of his pupils was American sprinter Connie Paraskevin, and they would later marry. Roger Young’s sister was Sheila Young, a multiple Olympic medalist in speed skating and a World Champion in both cycling and speed skating.
