Lucien Vanweydeveld was a mainstay of the Belgian national hockey team of the late 1940s and early 1950s, earning over 40 international caps over the duration of his career. A member of the Royal Daring Club based in the Brussels capital region, he was a midfielder, first débuting with the senior national team in 1947.
By career, Vanweydeveld worked for the mining company Gécamines, spending most of his professional career in Congo, where he lived with his family. There, he resided around Kolwezi in the Lualaba region, for about 20 years, from the early 1950s until his contract with the company ended in the 1970s. During his time there, he involved himself in the sporting community, also taking up tennis. Vanweydeveld eventually returned to Belgium, where he changed careers to accounting, working in Wavre and settling in Anderlecht. According to his family, he maintained connections and an attachment to Congo for the rest of his life. He died in 2019, aged 92.
