Henry Birtles played for the Moseley club for over 20 years and was still playing for them beyond the age of 42. He was captain of the second XV that won the Midland Counties Junior Cup for the eighth time in 1904. His younger brothers George and Spencer also played for Moseley and George was a Midlands County player. Henry was the captain of the Moseley Wanderers team at the 1900 Paris Olympics when he was one of the half-backs . He converted the second-half try scored by Joseph Wallis and also kicked a penalty to contribute five of Moseley’s eight points. Like his father before him, Henry Birtles was a commercial traveller.
