Ödön Schmid was one of the best Hungarian tennis players over 15 years at the beginning of the 20th century. Schmid won just one Hungarian championship in 1901 in the men’s singles, at the time the only event. Between 1899 and 1913, however, he won a total of fourteen silver and bronze medals in the singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. In 1907 he was one of the co-founders and executive Vice-President of the Hungarian National Lawn Tennis Association. After his death a regular tournament was implemented in his memory.
Ödon Schmid was a naval officer and later became a renowned water engineer. He was head of the Cultural Engineering Office in Nagyvárad, implementer of Sebes-Körös irrigation and editor of the “Water Bulletins”.
