Sonia Barrio was a Spanish hockey player who competed at the 1992, 1996, and 2000 Olympic Games, winning a gold medal in 1992 at Barcelona. In 2000 her Spanish team lost the bronze medal match to the Netherlands. Barrio won a silver medal at the 1995 European Nations Cup.
Barrio married José Luis Ballester, a Spanish swimmer who also competed at three Olympic Games. Their son, José Luis Ballester Barrio, became a professional golfer after winning the 2024 US Amateur Golf Championship.
