Biography

Although he appeared at two Olympics, hockey player Tony Ekins enjoyed his finest moments in the sport as a member of his club side Southgate. Ekins was a member of the Great Britain team that finished 12th (out of 16) at the 1968 Mexico Olympics, and sixth at München four years later. More notably, however, he was a member of the Southgate side that became the first British club to win the European Club Championship in 1976 when they beat the Belgian side Uccle 3-2 after being 2-1 down. Ekins and Southgate retained the title the following year with a 4-1 win, again over Uccle, and in 1978 they won it for a third straight year by beating the West German side Russelsheimer 5-2.

A defender, Ekins won 34 England and 35 Great Britain caps and had the honour of captaining both teams. He also later went on to manage both England (temporarily for the 1978 World Cup) and GB. He continued playing well into his 40s with Wisbech Veterans.

Elkins attended Felsted School along with fellow Olympians Richard Oliver and Tim Lawson, and in 1988 the three of them guested for Old Felstedians against an International XI. Their combined ages were more than 132 years at the time.
