As a cricketer, Langhorne enjoyed a career approaching 20 years with the London cub Shepherds Bush, having been in the first XI at the age of 17. He was an outstanding batsman and spin bowler.
His hockey career saw him play for the crack Hounslow team and Langhorne had the honour of captaining them to win the first two Hockey Association knockout cup finals, in 1972 and 1973. He also played hockey for Middlesex and in 1963 won his first Great Britain cap, a few months before making his England début. Langhorne went to the 1964 and 1972 Olympics, but ruled himself out of the Mexico City Games due to business commitments.
Appointed as coach to the England hockey team in 1973, Langhorne held the post for three years during which time they played in the 1975 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur.
