Hans-Dietrich Sasse and his brother Reinhart qualified for the 1968 Mexico City Games with the East German team. In the preliminary round during the 1968 Olympics, East and West Germany played their only official international match, with West Germany winning 3-2. East Germany finished the tournament as a disappointing eleventh, which caused East Germany to drastically reduce financial support for hockey (field).
Hans-Dietrich was an alternate in 1964, but did not play any matches in Tokyo, with Sasse also playing in that tournament. He played for SC Leipzig and earned 73 international caps for East Germany between 1963 and 1979. He later became a longtime field hockey coach and sports administrator in several positions within the East German Field Hockey Association and after reunification within the German one.
