Wolfgang Baumgart was capped 65 times with the German national team between 1968-73. He competed at two Olympic Games, winning gold in 1972 and finishing fourth in 1968, losing the bronze match against India 1-2. During this tournament the only official international match between East and West Germany was played in the preliminary round and was won by West Germany 3-2. At the club level, Baumgart played with SC Frankfurt 1880, winning the West German titles with them in 1968-70. He also won the EuroHockey Club Champions Cup with SC Frankfurt 1880 from 1971-75.
