Dirk, father of Björn Michel, played at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic hockey (field) tournament with West Germany, losing the bronze medal match against India, 2-1. East and West Germany played their only international match in a preliminary round, with West Germany winning 3-2. Michel was capped 30 times between 1966 and 1971. With the West German team he won the 1970 European title. Domestically he played with Münchner SC.
