Björn, son of Dirk Michel, was a German field hockey player who participated in the 2000 Olympics at Sydney. Germany beat Great Britain 4-0 to win the match for fifth place. At Athens in 2004 he finally won a medal, when Germany beat Spain 4-3 after sudden death extra time in the bronze medal match.
In 1995, 1999, and 2003, Michel won the European Championship, and the 1997, 1999, 2001, and 2003 European Indoors. He also won the Champions Trophy in 1997 and 2001, the Worlds in 2002, and the World Indoors in 2003. Michel was on the squads that lost the Champions Trophy finals in 1993, 2000, and 2002. He played 334 international matches (including 27 indoor), scoring 250 goals (20 indoor) from 1998-2004.
Domestically, Michel played with Münchner SC. He was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. By profession, he became a graduated medical practitioner.
