Indian-born Santokh Singh Matharu spent many years representing Kenya in international field hockey, including two appearances at the Summer Olympic Games. In 1964 he played in four of the five opening round matches, for which Kenya won three, tied one, and lost two, just barely missing qualification for the next round. The nation then went on to defeat the Netherlands in the classification round, but lost to Germany in the final round and placed sixth overall. In 1968 Kenya again came up just shy of qualification in the opening round, winning four matches, tying one, and losing three. This time, however, they lost to Spain in the qualification round, as well as New Zealand in the final round, giving them an eighth-place ranking overall. Singh Matharu played in every match in this tournament. His other notable appearance came at the 1971 World Cup, where Kenya finished fourth. Nationally Singh Matharu represented Railway Gymkhana Nairobi and later coached various teams at the club level. He died of cancer in Nairobi in July 2011 at the age of 69.
