Biography

Domestically, goalkeeper Joost Boks made his senior début for Amsterdam (AH&BC) in 1960. As one of the leading Dutch club teams in the 1960s, it won the title 1962-1966 (although the championship wasn’t held in 1963). In 1963, Boks played his first of 50 international matches with the Dutch national team. Remarkably for a goalie, he scored in one of these games, scoring a penalty stroke against Germany in a 1967 friendly match.

Boks was selected for both the 1964 and 1968 Olympics. In the deciding pool stage match in Mexico 1968, a dominant Dutch side trailed Australia 0-1 when Boks attempted to save a shot. Although Boks claimed this was incorrect, he was fouled for sitting on the ball. Australia converted the subsequent penalty stroke and eliminated Boks and the Dutch from medal contention. Boks retired after the Games, pursuing a career with IBM, for which he moved to Canada in the 1970s.
