Abdul Rashid was inspired to take up hockey by his older brother, Abdul Hamid, who won two medals for Pakistan across four editions of the Olympics from 1948 through 1960, including gold in his final year. Abdul Rashid made his major international début at the 1968 Mexico City Games, taking home gold, and followed up with silver in 1972 and bronze in 1976. He was captain of the team for the final edition and retired shortly after those Games, with a then-record of 96 international goals.
He also earned gold medals at the 1971 World Cup and the 1970 and 1974 Asian Games. He later turned to coaching and eventually earned gold in that capacity as well, at the 1994 World Cup, and was also involved in the administration of the sport.
