Aleksandra Zabelina started in sport as a gymnast, but an injury caused her to switch to fencing after a friend suggested she join him at his fencing club. Competing at three Olympic Games (1960, 1968, 1972), Zabelina won three gold medals and, individually, won 17 of her 30 bouts, helping the Soviet Union win 32 team matches out of 47. Zabelina was World Champion in women’s individual foil in 1957 and 1961 and won seven World titles in the team event, also adding six silver medals at the World Championships. In 1970 she graduated from the Moscow Institute of History and Archives. After retiring from competition, she worked as a coach at the Dynamo sports club, Moscow.
