Alois Gottfried was an Austrian foil fencer who competed at the 1924 Olympics. He reached the second round with both the Austrian foil team and in the individual event, but did not start in the sabre events for unknown reasons. He competed for Club Hakoah of Wien (Vienna), a Jewish sports club.
Gottfried was a lawyer, but because of his religion he did not feel safe in 1930s Austria, and in September 1938 escaped to Zürich, Switzerland, and then Le Havre, France, where he caught the Ile de France ship to the United States. He petitioned to become a US citizen on 18 November 1938. Gottfried then practiced as a lawyer in Los Angeles, where he died in 1996.
