Fencer Karl Hanisch was a member of the Austrian sabre team that finished fifth at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He also participated in the individual and team épée events but was eliminated in the first round of both. He also acted as an international judge at the Berlin Games.
In 1931, Hanisch won a bronze medal at the World Championships with the Austrian foil team. He won five Austrian Championships at épée in 1934 and 1936, foil in 1944 and 1948, and sabre in 1944. He also enjoyed podium finishes in épée between 1932-49, and sabre from 1931-46.
