Fencer Karl Kaschka captained the Austrian sabre team that finished fifth at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He also acted as an international judge at those Games. In 1932 and 1933 he was Austrian sabre champion.
In 1941, Kaschka was killed in action along with his gunner during World War II, when his aircraft was shot down during aerial combat with a British Hurricane near Tobruk, Libya. Kaschka was a major of the German Wehrmacht and a member of the Zerstörergeschwader 26 (ZG 26) “Horst Wessel”.
