Biography

Arno Strohmeyer was an Austrian épée fencer who competed at the 1984 Los Angeles and 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics. He placed 26th and 11th in the individual events, respectively. He also won several Austrian national titles in 1984, 1989, 1992. In 1991, Strohmeyer won a bronze medal at the European Championships.

Strohmeyer later became professor for Modern History, and Deputy Director of the Institute for Habsburg and Balkan Studies at the Austrian Academy of Sciences at the University of Salzburg. Strohmeyer researched pre-modern politics based on cultural-scientific and anthropological theories and methods. From his appointment to the Chair of Modern History at the University of Salzburg (2007), Strohmeyer worked intensively on intercultural relations between Christian and Muslim cultures, particularly the Habsburg Monarchy, the Holy Roman Empire and the Ottoman Empire in the field of diplomacy and travel.
