East German foil fencer Jens Howe finished fourth with the team at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Individually, he lost his quarter-final against West German Ulrich Schreck, and finished seventh overall. In 1983, Howe won a foil silver medal with the East German team and added a bronze in 1986. In 1989, he won his only individual national title.
