Klaus Haertter was the only East German fencer competing at the 1976 Montréal Games. He was eliminated in pool three of the foil semi-finals. Four years later, when the Western countries boycotted the Moskva Games, he finished fourth with the East German foil team. Individually, he again was eliminated in the semi-finals. Domestically, he won five individual foil titles at the East German nationals. He later worked as a fencing coach in Dresden.
