Fencer Hans Esser claimed a bronze medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympics with the foil team, and came fourth with the epée team. He competed in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, but with no successes in the individual and team foil events. At the Fencing World Championships he won two bronze medals with the sabre teams in 1935 and 1937. In 1941 and 1953 he won the individual sabre title at the German Championships.
