Uwe Proske was by far the best East German épée fencer up to re-unification. He participated in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, but only finished 34th. Four years later at Barcelona, and now representing Germany, he won the gold medal with the team. At the World Championships the previous year, the team won the bronze medal.
Proske was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award in 1993. He later became president of the Berlin Fencing Federation and a member of the German Fencing Federation, responsible for épée fencing. Proske was a graduated sports teacher and later worked with a marketing and sport event agency in Berlin.
