Biography

József Marosi never won a major individual international fencing medal during his career, but he captured several in team events, beginning bronze in the foil at the 1954 World Championships. After taking silver in the foil and bronze in the épée the following year, he made his Olympic début at the 1956 Melbourne Games, where he won silver and bronze in the épée and foil tournaments respectively. At the 1959 Summer Universiade, he also took silver in the foil and bronze in the épée. He had a second Olympic appearance in 1960, where he was fourth in the team épée and was also a reserve with the foil squad.

Marosi did win several individual medals at the national championships, beginning with silver in the épée and bronze in the foil in 1957. In 1960 he was runner-up in the épée, while in 1962 he came in second in the foil. He won five Hungarian épée team titles in 1962, 1963, 1964, 1966, and 1971, as well as a foil team title in 1963. He received a degree in mechanical engineering from Budapest University of Technology and Economics in 1958 and later worked as a designer and a lecturer. His younger sister, Paula, was a two-time Olympic medalist for Hungary in the team foil.
