Biography

Endre Palócz began fencing for BEAC at the age of 18, before competing for UTE from 1933. In 1936 Palócz transferred to MAC, then from 1945 he fenced for Budapesti Vasas, and from 1954 for Budapesti Vörös Meteor. For twenty years he represented Hungary in the national team across all three fencing weapons (épée, foil, sabre), winning 11 Hungarian team championship titles.

His best results at the international level also came in team events. In 1935, in Budapest at the International University Games he won two gold medals, one with the foil team and the other as a member of the sabre team. He competed in two Olympic Games: in 1948 (London), with foil team finished fifth; in 1952 (Helsinki), they won bronze. He became a two-time team world champion in sabre team: in 1951 (Stockholm) and 1955 (Rome). Palócz was also world championship bronze medalist in foil team in 1953 (Brussels) and 1954 (Luxembourg).

Palócz did not compete at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. He retired from competitive fencing in 1957 and became a coach. From 1967 he taught in Cuba for six years, playing a key role in the rise of Cuban fencing. Later he coached at Budapesti Vörös Meteor and MTK-VM, known for educating students not only in fencing but also in humanity and sportsmanship.

Palócz later served as an international referee for the FIE for 10 years. He earned a law degree from Pázmány Péter University and initially worked for Egyesült Izzó Rt., later serving as a company manager and senior group leader at the Hungarian National Bank.
