Biography

Ahmed Akbari was an Iranian fencer and coach. At the 1974 Asian Games Akbari won the gold medal in the team sabre event. Two years later he represented Iran in three events at the 1976 Montréal Olympics. Akbari continued fencing throughout his life, winning an individual and team bronze at the 2017 Asian Veteran Championships.

As well as competing in the sport, Akbari founded the fencing department of the Iranian Ministry of Sports, overseeing the department from 1991 to 2009. At a local level Akbari was the director of the Tehran Province Fencing Department from 1989 to 1999. Akbari was also the Secretary General of the Iranian Fencing Federation on two occasions, the first from 1993 to 1998, and the second tenure from 2009 to 2011.

Akbari was also prolific in the teaching and coaching of fencing in Iran. He served as the head of the Iranian University Sports Department and worked as a sports professor at the Amir Kabir Polytechnic University. Akbari chaired the Iranian Training Committee and also coached the national foil team.
