Roberto Ferrari was a staple of the Italian national fencing team during the 1950s. In the first half of the decade, he won six medals in team events at the World Championships: gold in sabre and foil in 1950 and 1954 respectively, silver in sabre in 1951, 1953, and 1955, and silver in foil in 1953. During that time, he also won a silver medal in the team sabre at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. At the Mediterranean Games, he won gold and bronze in team and individual sabre respectively in 1951, and gold and silver in those events in 1955. He returned to the Olympics in 1956 in Melbourne and was eliminated in the semi-finals of both the individual and team sabre tournaments. His final edition of the Games came in 1960 in Rome, when he took bronze in the team sabre and was eliminated in the semi-finals individually.
